I saw your eyes today;
they were beautiful
and sad.
A little boy
who lost his dad
was looking up at me
through them.
I smiled for him
and held him as close
as a pre-teen boy would let
an almost-stranger,
said goodbye to him
like I was saying it to you.
See you soon, I said.
I'm here if you need me,
and I will come spend time with you
when I can.
And it was like you again,
like last time we talked
and I was busy and had to run
but I knew I could call you
any time.
So this time,
no vague empty promises
to call when I have extra time;
those are your eyes,
and the only time
I will ever have
is right now.
